Welcome, if you are reading this. This post begins actual blog-like activities. Here are places I am going for the first two months:
Spain: Madrid, San Sebastian, Bilboa, Barcelona
Italy: Rome, Ostia Antica, Pisa, Lucca, Bologna
Greece: Athens, Ios, Paros, Thira/Santorini
Istanbul
Burachest
Bucharest
Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival. But I am also going to take a day or two and go up to the Highlands. On a daylong bus tour. Not by renting a car and getting a DUI like some people I know once did.
If you, assuming there are "you"s reading this, have done something cool in one of these places, you should tell me about it in the comments.

Athens - take a half day trip to Sounion. There's a hour or so bus ride to a Poseidon temple ruins right on the Mediterranean. You get to see the countryside (olive colors and dusty landscape) and if you time it right, the sunset there was spectacular. This was the favorite Greek temple I saw.
ReplyDeleteIstanbul - make sure you go inside one of the mosques - the Blue Mosque was amazingly beautiful (one of the most spiritual spaces I've ever been in). And you HAVE to go see the Hagia Sophia - one of the wonders of the world - oldest largest self standing dome of the ancient world.
Bologna - watch your bag - this was where I was very almost pickpocketted.
Barcelona - Parc Guell, designed by Gaudi - smells like Spain should. Quite a hike up several flghts of urban stairs/escalators to get to the park, but worth it. It is fabulous urban space.
Oh my gosh
ReplyDeleteIstanbul.
I can't tell you how much I love that city!!
